wkhtmltopdf on ARM64 and Apple Silicon

wkhtmltopdf’s ARM64 packages stop at Debian 12 and Ubuntu 22.04 (May 2023), its only macOS package predates Apple Silicon (June 2020), and its Windows builds are x86 only. pdfkiln runs natively on ARM64, on Linux and macOS.

Linux ARM64

The APT repository has arm64 packages for Debian 12 and 13 and Ubuntu 22.04 and later, with the same commands as on amd64:

curl -fsS https://apt.pdfkiln.org/pdfkiln-archive-keyring.asc | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/pdfkiln-archive-keyring.asc > /dev/null
printf 'Types: deb\nURIs: https://apt.pdfkiln.org\nSuites: stable\nComponents: main\nSigned-By: /usr/share/keyrings/pdfkiln-archive-keyring.asc\n' \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pdfkiln.sources
sudo apt update && sudo apt install pdfkiln

Also for ARM64: the Docker image, and the Linux ARM64 archive of the latest release, with its Chromium.

macOS with Apple Silicon

The macOS ARM64 archive of the latest release: unpack it anywhere, put its folder in the PATH. Or, with Node.js 22.12 or later, the npm package, which fetches Chromium for Apple Silicon on first use, SHA-256 checked:

npx @pdfkiln/pdfkiln wkhtmltopdf page.html page.pdf
npm install -g @pdfkiln/pdfkiln # pdfkiln, wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage

Windows on ARM

pdfkiln is built for x64, which Windows on ARM runs in emulation: the installer or the zip of the latest release, as on any PC.

Check

wkhtmltopdf --version
# wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 (with patched qt), pdfkiln 1.0.3, Chromium 156.0.8078.73
